Reach new heights!
Mount Etna: the master of the place
Dominating the east coast of Sicily, Mount Etna stands proudly as the highest active volcano in Europe ⚡️. Its majestic presence and constant activity make it a must-see attraction . Hiking enthusiasts will find a variety of trails suitable for all levels.
For a gentler approach, the trails around 2,000 meters altitude , near the Rifugio Sapienza (southern slope), are easily accessible. The flat path around the Silvestri crater , formed in the 19th century, is ideal for families. Another, steeper trail leads to a crater created by the 2001 eruption.
More experienced hikers can aim for the Barbagallo Craters , formed by the 2002 eruption: approximately 5 km with 1000 m of elevation gain , taking 6 to 8 hours to complete. The routes towards Torre Del Filosofo offer spectacular views.
Experienced hikers can attempt the ascent to the summit (3323 m). From Rifugio Sapienza, the route is 9 km long with 1200 m of elevation gain and takes 10 to 12 hours round trip . The route can be divided into stages: first to Bar Funivia (2500 m), then Torre Del Filosofo (2870 m), before the final section to the summit. ⚠️ A certified guide is mandatory above 2900 m due to volcanic hazards.
Climbing Mount Etna offers breathtaking panoramic views of Sicily and the Ionian Sea. But be warned: conditions can change depending on volcanic activity. Access restrictions are frequent.
Beyond the Summit
Mount Etna is not just its summit. The volcano's slopes offer numerous adventures for active travelers. Ancient lava flows , lunar landscapes , and resurgent vegetation : all of this creates a striking setting of light and shadow.
Spending a night in a mountain refuge , such as Rifugio Sapienza , enriches the experience. It offers accommodation and meals and is an ideal starting point for various excursions. A cable car takes you up to 2500 meters , then a 4x4 bus transports you to around 2900 meters . The adventure continues on foot, always accompanied by an accredited guide .
The wilder northern slope (Etna Nord) starts at Piano Provenzana , crosses pine forests , beech groves , and frozen lava flows . Less touristy, it appeals to hikers seeking authenticity . The more frequented southern slope (Etna Sud) offers infrastructure such as the cable car , souvenirs , and more accessible marked trails .
In addition to hiking, there are other ways to experience Mount Etna:
- Mountain biking on black lava trails , with or without a guide?♂️
- On horseback , through the forests , to panoramic craters ?
