Discover cross-country skiing
The history of the discipline
Did you know? Originating in the Nordic countries and used for transportation, cross-country skiing is the oldest skiing discipline. Initially a simple means of getting around, cross-country skiing has become a recreational and sporting activity, and also an Olympic event for the first time at the Chamonix Games in 1924.
Over the years, cross-country skiing has reinvented and modernized itself, thanks in particular to the evolution of equipment and the various techniques involved. Its popularity continues to grow, and it is becoming a truly trendy sport due to its authenticity, its ecological appeal, and its athletic nature.
The different ways to practice cross-country skiing
Classic, skating or Nordic?
Indeed, this discipline has only one word, but so many techniques available to you, allowing you to practice it according to your preferences. We explain all the differences between each one.
On the trails, a distinction is made between classic cross-country skiing, practiced using the diagonal stride technique, and skating, which resembles the skating stride. Classic skiing is open to everyone and is recommended for beginners. The tracks are there to guide, assist, and reassure you. Skating is for more experienced skiers who enjoy the thrill, speed, and physical challenge.
Off-piste, there's Nordic ski touring, which involves exploring off-piste areas in a manner similar to ski touring. Nordic cross-country skis are wider, making descents more stable.
