For us, responsible tourism is tourism that is aware of its impact on the environment.
Decathlon Travel has been registered as a mission-driven company since July 2022.
The entire team works daily to implement our purpose: we are committed to adopting
sustainable practices and to share them with tourism stakeholders, who are our service providers
tourists, our employees and our customers, in order to act together for a better world.

1. Measure
We calculate the carbon impact of all our stays to provide you with transparency and allow you to make an informed choice.
We built a CO2e emissions calculator using figures provided by ADEME. Each emission source is accounted for during each of our trips.
ADEME, the French Agency for Ecological Transition, is an independent agency funded by the state. It guarantees the impartiality and accuracy of the data it provides. This data allows us to determine that a given activity, food, or product emits a certain amount of CO2e. If you would like more information on this topic, click here.
🥸 And in practical terms, how does it work?
When you create a trip, its emissions are automatically calculated based on the information you provide: number of kilometers driven for a transfer, vegetarian or non-vegetarian meals, activities undertaken, etc. Only the emissions from services sold by us and included in the price of the stay are taken into account in the calculation (excluding options added to the trip).
👉 To “convert” the steps of your program, ADEME provides us with emissions by activity, type of meal, accommodation.
For example: 1 vegetarian meal = 1.10 kg of CO2/person/meal. If there are 6 meals during your stay, we simply calculate 1.10 * 6, and so on for all the elements of your trip.
2. Reduce
We encourage you to reduce your emissions by choosing a stay from a low-carbon impact offer.
The carbon footprint of each of our trips is displayed on the trip page. The aim is to encourage you to be aware of the impact of your trip.

Our low-carbon trips meet the following 3 criteria:
✅ The presence of a train or bus station within 40km of the departure city of the trip in France or Europe
✅ Maximum 12 kg CO2e per day per traveler
✅ A low-emission sporting activity (unlike horse riding, downhill skiing, diving, golf, electric cycling).

Contributing together to global carbon neutrality
🤔 ⚖️ 🌍 What is the contribution to global carbon neutrality?
Global carbon neutrality is the balance between carbon emissions into the atmosphere and the absorption of carbon from the atmosphere by carbon sinks. To achieve this balance, all greenhouse gas emissions worldwide must be offset by carbon sequestration.
💙 How do we contribute to global carbon neutrality?
1. Account for customer emissions
The amount of the contribution to global carbon neutrality, in €, corresponds to the total emissions produced by a customer during their trip, multiplied by the price at which we buy the kg of CO2e absorbed by the project we are funding. In 2023 and 2024, we are buying a tonne of CO2e for €31.
👉 Here are a few examples to make this more concrete:
- For the snowshoeing and tipi overnight trip in the Queyras, the contribution amount is: 8.96 kg CO2e x €0.036 = €0.32 per traveler
- For the Kilimanjaro trip via Machame and safaris, staying in lodges, the contribution amount is: 4060 kg CO2e x €0.036 = 146.16
Because we believe in the need for a collective effort, we invite you to contribute in proportion to your emissions by funding two certified reforestation projects in France 💪
To encourage you to travel more responsibly, if the trip is marked "low carbon," we cover the entire cost of contributing to global carbon neutrality! ✅
2. Purchase carbon credits certified with the “Low Carbon Label” by the Ministry of Ecological Transition up to 100% of the emissions generated.
3. These carbon credits then allow us to contribute financially to two projects aimed at creating new carbon sequestration sinks, and therefore absorbing more CO2.
Since 2022, we have been working with Stock CO2, a carbon offsetting operator that manages and develops projects reducing or sequestering carbon emissions. We were committed to supporting local projects.

This carbon offset project is located in the commune of Saint-Cyr-le-Gravelais, in the Mayenne department of the Pays de la Loire region. The project involves planting trees on abandoned agricultural plots, covering a total area of 5.9 hectares. This planting will supplement an existing forest.

Devastated by the terrible fires of summer 2022, the project is located in the commune of Mano in the Landes department (Nouvelle-Aquitaine region). This forest will be replanted with maritime pine. The replanting will incorporate firebreaks (non-wooded and regularly cleared strips) to prevent the spread of such fires and to facilitate access for firefighters to the areas closest to the fires.

4. Commit
Working daily as a team to adopt sustainable practices
ATR has been the leading association of responsible tourism stakeholders since 2004.
Decathlon Travel is a member of the association Agir pour un Tourisme Responsable, and the general manager is part of its board of directors.
As part of this commitment we invite our customers to follow the principles of the Traveller Ethical Charter relayed by ATR.
In 2024, Decathlon Travel is participating in the Business Convention for Climate. We are following a 12-month program to:

👉 Building links between public and private stakeholders to successfully achieve the transition of our territory together
Going further with committed collaborators
Beyond our stays, we wish to begin a trajectory of reducing our carbon emissions within the company itself.
Each year, a carbon footprint assessment of the company is carried out via SAMI, an all-in-one solution for supporting the transition and environmental reporting.
In 2023, employee intensity was reduced by 1.5 tonnes of CO2 per employee: travel emissions decreased by 55%, while digital emissions fell by 65%. We are continuing our efforts to further reduce our employee intensity in 2024.
