april 2026 Chamonix-Zermatt on ski touring, the legendary Haute Route
Translated from French
Excerpt from my journal (last day) Okay then, day 6, last day. The night before, during the debriefing, Patrick told us, "That was a Club Med vacation. Now you'll see!" Lots of difficulties with three mountain passes, a nighttime start with headlamps on a completely icy, vertical slope. 4:45 a.m., wake-up, breakfast. I didn't sleep at all, and Arnaud hardly slept any better. 5:30 a.m. We set off. We take the same path we took the day before that led us to the Refuge, which is a snow ridge with sheer drops on both sides. We walk slowly with our headlamps, our packs with our skis strapped on. Arnaud's headlamp isn't working; the battery is dead! He uses the light from the person who came before him. Reaching a certain point, where the slope is vertical and covered in ice, Patrick orders us to put on our skis. We skid straight down into the void. No room for error. Then we reached a plateau, heading towards the Col de l'Évêque. Next, we tackled a second pass, the Col de la Tête va Brûlée. At the foot of the pass, we put on our crampons and climbed roped together to the top. The ski descent was magnificent, where we began to discover the panorama of all the 4,000-meter peaks in Switzerland. Finally, at the bottom, we headed towards the Col de Valpeline, before descending to Zermatt, about a 600-meter climb. It was there that your narrator kindly collapsed on the ascent. My good guide waited for me and told me I wasn't up to it! That said it! Arnaud had been at the top for quite some time. From up there, the panorama of the 4,000-meter peaks is unique. The Matterhorn reigns supreme and wouldn't let us go until Zermatt. We began the descent together to Zermatt, a drop of about 2,000 meters. The snow is great. We're completely alone. What bliss! It's 3 p.m. We've arrived in Zermatt. Today's elevation gain: 1350 m, mine: 2900 m, distance covered: 25 km. Duration: 9 hours. In total, over the six days, we covered 102 km and climbed 6400 m.

A magnificent experience on this legendary route. The trip was a complete success, thanks to a superb guide: professional, reassuring, and with excellent terrain awareness. One slight drawback, however, was the group composition: the physical abilities varied considerably. Some participants didn't have the required level for such a trek, which inevitably impacted the group dynamic and pace. A huge thank you to the guide for his adaptability and skillful management of the group despite these differences. I highly recommend his services! Thank you, Patrick.

Skiing in complete freedom
Tired of groomed slopes, endless queues at the bottom of ski lifts, and pylons and other cables that ruin your best selfies?

The solution is obvious: why not try ski touring?

Set off on wild routes, on your own, far from the crowds: if you have even a little taste for effort, it's time to take the plunge into this active winter sport for maximum enjoyment!

Scouting and following the route, the satisfaction of reaching the summit, the tranquility, and finally the reward of the descent—a ski touring trip is an adventure in itself: enough to satisfy the winter sports enthusiast seeking escape, especially when accompanied by a guide. Lovers of ski touring, you've found the ideal sport to combine your passion with the pleasures of skiing: grab your skins!

Introductory ski touring courses to get started safely

Ski touring for beginners: a gentle introduction to ski touring

The main appeal of ski touring lies in its ability to allow you to venture into isolated and wild areas, the opposite of marked downhill ski slopes, which are sometimes crowded with holidaymakers. On the other hand, this natural environment is not as safe as a typical downhill ski resort. It is therefore your responsibility to check the conditions on your route (weather, snow cover, and avalanche risk). There's no secret to this: training with experts, ideally professionals, is essential. During our introductory trips, a guide will lead you, sharing their expertise and passion for the mountains.

In addition to the technical aspects that beginners need to grasp, including the famous kick turn, you'll need to familiarize yourself with your essential safety equipment: avalanche transceiver (also called a beacon), shovel, and probe. During your ski touring course, all these fundamental principles will, of course, be taught to you.

Also note that more and more ski resorts are offering safe and marked routes for a worry-free introduction to the activity.

From 2-day ski touring weekends to week-long ski tours

On the road to ski touring: escape awaits!

Ski touring offers you an unlimited number of possibilities. From quick day trips to multi-day itineraries, whether you prefer a star-shaped route or a true point-to-point tour, the choice is yours!

This activity allows you to perfectly adapt to your desires and the current conditions. It's possible to undertake true expeditions, from mountain hut to mountain hut, across the most renowned mountain ranges. Some routes are even world-famous: the Chamonix-Zermatt ski tour ("Cham-Zer" for those in the know) is a perfect example. For a worry-free trip, travel with an expert guide.

In a breathtaking setting, it allows you to connect, on skis, through passes, valleys, peaks and glaciers of the Alps, the two greatest capitals of mountaineering: on the French side on the slopes of Mont Blanc and on the Swiss side at the foot of the iconic Matterhorn!

Ski touring trip in the Alps and the Pyrenees

Well-supervised ski touring trips for all levels

Where to go for a ski touring trip? There are many possibilities among the mountain ranges of our beautiful country. We invite you to discover the Alps and the Pyrenees together, essential playgrounds for ski touring.

Let's start with the Alps. Many ski resorts offer safe ski touring routes; here, by the way, is our top 5 list of the best resorts to discover ski touring. A sure bet remains Chamonix, the cradle of mountaineering. Want to try ski touring? Opt for a 5-day introductory trip! For ski touring enthusiasts, the famous Chamonix-Zermatt route awaits. Staying in the Alps, let's head to the Écrins. This superb mountain range, renowned for its glaciers and legendary peaks, is best explored on touring skis, in peace and quiet during a long winter weekend, for example. Another must-see Alpine range, the Beaufortain, will charm you with its exceptional snow cover and typical little villages. To conclude this overview of the Alps for ski touring, discover the Vanoise via the Carro-Evettes traverse, one of the most beautiful ski tours in the Alps. The added bonus? Nights spent in typical and comfortable mountain huts.

Prefer the Pyrenees? The playgrounds are just as plentiful! Our favorite spot: the Val d'Aran and its magnificent landscapes. From February to April, enjoy fantastic descents and summits to climb in a breathtaking setting.
