Experience the magic of the Northern Lights with Decathlon Travel?
Every year, from September to April, the skies of the northern regions offer a colorful spectacle, a phenomenon that fascinates as much as it amazes. Let's discover together what lies behind this unique show!
The Northern Lights: a luminous phenomenon
The aurora borealis, or "northern lights," occurs when charged particles from the sun collide with the Earth's atmosphere at the poles. The result? Waves of light in the sky, in the form of colorful waves.
The colors depend on the gases present:
- Green ? Oxygen at low altitude.
- Red ? Still oxygen, but higher up.
- Blue or purple ? It's nitrogen.
And for the show to be perfect, you need a clear sky and as little light pollution as possible.
When to leave?
If you want to maximize your chances of seeing them, aim for between September and April.
- In January and February , the nights are long, perfect for chasing the Northern Lights.
- September and March : The days get a little longer, perfect for exploring the region before nightfall
Be warned, it can get very cold very quickly. In Finland, temperatures can drop to -30°C . But don't worry, with the right gear and a good pair of thick gloves, it becomes almost pleasant.
Our favorite destinations
1. Norway, near Tromsø
The "Gateway to the Arctic" is known for its fjords. In addition to the Northern Lights, you can go dog sledding or hiking.
2. The village of Kilpisjärvi, Finland
It's serenity personified: no big cities, just vast white expanses. Bonus: a sauna session to warm up after chasing the Northern Lights.
3. Iceland and its amazing landscapes
Here, it's a perfect mix. You have the Northern Lights and, during the day, volcanoes, glaciers and even hot springs to relax in.
4. Greenland, for adventurers
If you're looking for absolute peace and quiet, this is it. No light pollution, ideal conditions… and a real change of scenery.
A few tips to make the most of it
- Dress like an onion. Layering is key. A good thermal base layer, a fleece, and a windproof jacket. And above all: warm shoes!
- Be prepared to wait. The Northern Lights don't follow a schedule, but that's part of the experience. Bring a thermos of hot chocolate.
- Take care of your cameras. The cold can kill your batteries in no time, so remember to carry several with you.
Much more than just a show
This trip is also an immersion in a unique culture. Whether in Norway, Finland, or Iceland, you'll taste traditional dishes (how about some lutefisk?).
