    Mountaineering

    Beginner
Mountaineering is a demanding sport; consequently, there is no "beginner" physical level for it. If you have never mountaineered before, you can aim for an intermediate or advanced level.
    Intermediate
For fit hikers who wish to experience the high mountains. No specific mountaineering skills are required; the crampon work is straightforward. Guides are on hand to provide instruction and ensure your safety. The daily elevation gain generally ranges from 700 to a maximum of 1,000 meters.
    Confirmed
For those who engage in endurance or mountain sports (running, cycling, trail running, rock climbing, trekking, etc.) three or more times a week. You are capable of hiking for long hours in the mountains and ascending around 1,500 meters in a single day. Ideally, you have some prior high-altitude experience (such as walking in crampons), though this is not essential if you are in excellent physical condition. To aid acclimatization, it is recommended to go mountain hiking in the days leading up to the trip.
    Advanced
For those who regularly practice endurance or mountain sports (running, cycling, trail running, rock climbing, trekking, etc.)—at least four times a week. You are capable of hiking for over eight hours in the mountains and ascending between 1,500 and 2,000 vertical meters in a single day. You have mastered crampon techniques. Prior mountaineering experience (ascents or ice training) is mandatory.
    Expert
For those in excellent physical condition who regularly engage in mountain activities (rock climbing, mountaineering, ice climbing, etc.): you have mastered mountaineering techniques and are capable of undertaking climbs rated D or higher.

In a few words

It's the only 4,000-meter peak entirely in Italy : this famous ascent of the Gran Paradiso , with its vast glaciers and manageable slopes, is an iconic yet accessible peak. It's undoubtedly an ideal destination for anyone dreaming of summits and high altitudes to cross the mythical 4,000-meter mark . From the Valsavarenche Valley in Italy, we'll ascend at a leisurely pace to our first refuge, Chabod (2,750m). Then comes the big day: the ascent of the monarch of this National Park, Gran Paradiso, at 4,061m. A beautiful glacial climb with a rocky finish leads to the summit statue of the Virgin Mary. We'll be rewarded with a descent to the Victor Emmanuel II refuge. On the final day, a peaceful return to the valley, to Pont, awaits, with a lovely descent through wildflowers and larch trees. On the third day, we'll admire the Gran Paradiso massif from a pretty, easy summit, Tresenta (3,609m), before descending back into the valley.

The highlights

  • A 3-day ascent for those with limited time.
  • A cross-country program to vary the landscapes and discover this Italian Natural Park
  • A first 4,000 accessible

The expert's opinion

This trip requires excellent physical fitness as you will be climbing a peak over 4000m. You will have little time to acclimatize, so it may be beneficial to have already done some classic mountain hiking in the days prior.

The main difficulties lie in the final meters before the summit due to a few exposed climbing sections . The rest of the ascent is primarily on the moraine and glacier. Prior experience with crampons is recommended to fully enjoy this weekend.

The trip met expectations, the guide was very competent and knowledgeable, but had to manage a very heterogeneous group (one participant was completely out of their depth, another had medical issues, reported to Decathlon, but this information was not passed on to the guide). The favorable weather allowed for a smooth trip, but even a slight deterioration would have forced the entire group to stop. A more thorough check and proper communication of client information MUST be carried out before sending clients to high altitude.

Good morning,

Thank you for sharing your feelings. I completely understand your point of view.

You are right: the guide's role is first and foremost to guarantee the safety of the group, the feasibility of the routes and the adaptation of the route on the ground, without making any judgment on the people.

However, the transmission of medical information or prior experience remains essential to allow the staff to adapt the pace and anticipate any specific needs at high altitude. We will ensure that the management of data transmitted by our travelers is carried out with the utmost respect and discretion.

Thank you again for your constructive feedback which helps us to refine our procedures.

We had some problems with our guide, Bruno. (He wasn't very sociable.) We drove him with us from Chamonix to the starting point of the climb in Italy, a 1.5-hour drive. There, the guide realized he'd left his shoes in Chamonix. He wanted to cancel the weekend. It was still early in the day, so I offered to drive him back to Chamonix to get his shoes while the rest of the group hiked up to the first refuge. He agreed. So I drove back to Chamonix, another 1.5-hour drive. When we arrived at the Mont Blanc Tunnel, he refused to pay (even though the round trip was entirely his fault). It took 10 minutes to reason with him, and he finally paid. The same thing happened with the gas. After retrieving his shoes, we set off again for the start of the climb, another 1.5-hour drive. He accused my friend (Charlotte), with whom I had come, of asking him too many questions that morning before we left, which he said had distracted him and that's why he'd forgotten his shoes! This created a tense atmosphere all weekend. He never admitted his mistake and didn't even thank me for making him do this unplanned round trip. That evening at the refuge, during dinner, the guide went to bed without even briefing us about the next day's climb. We still climbed Gran Paradiso as planned. The group was very friendly. But the guide was awful all weekend.

Overall, the trip went well, despite a tricky start. The guide had left his hiking boots in his car in Chamonix, so someone had to make the round trip from the Aosta Valley to retrieve them. The three of us then hiked up to the refuge without the guide. As a result, the atmosphere during the trip was rather tense!

Hello Laurent,

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We are delighted that the stay went well overall, although we understand that the start may have marred the experience.

Indeed, the guide's absence led to unusual arrangements, and we sincerely regret that you had to begin the climb without assistance. We fully understand that this may have caused some tension at the start of your trip.

Our local partner also regrets this situation, which remains exceptional. Your feedback allows us to increase our vigilance to ensure that this type of incident does not happen again in the future.

We hope that you will nevertheless retain fond memories of this mountain adventure and that we will have the pleasure of seeing you again soon for new sporting experiences.
