    Mountaineering

    Beginner
Mountaineering is a demanding sport; consequently, there is no "beginner" physical level for it. If you have never mountaineered before, you can aim for an intermediate or advanced level.
    Intermediate
For fit hikers who wish to experience the high mountains. No specific mountaineering skills are required; the crampon work is straightforward. Guides are on hand to provide instruction and ensure your safety. The daily elevation gain generally ranges from 700 to a maximum of 1,000 meters.
    Confirmed
For those who engage in endurance or mountain sports (running, cycling, trail running, rock climbing, trekking, etc.) three or more times a week. You are capable of hiking for long hours in the mountains and ascending around 1,500 meters in a single day. Ideally, you have some prior high-altitude experience (such as walking in crampons), though this is not essential if you are in excellent physical condition. To aid acclimatization, it is recommended to go mountain hiking in the days leading up to the trip.
    Advanced
For those who regularly practice endurance or mountain sports (running, cycling, trail running, rock climbing, trekking, etc.)—at least four times a week. You are capable of hiking for over eight hours in the mountains and ascending between 1,500 and 2,000 vertical meters in a single day. You have mastered crampon techniques. Prior mountaineering experience (ascents or ice training) is mandatory.
    Expert
For those in excellent physical condition who regularly engage in mountain activities (rock climbing, mountaineering, ice climbing, etc.): you have mastered mountaineering techniques and are capable of undertaking climbs rated D or higher.

The expert's opinion

The Gran Paradiso is possible for beginners provided of course that they are in very good physical condition and able to walk for long hours with significant elevation changes (between 1200m and 1700m).

No technical skill required but there is a small rocky ridge, like a Via Ferrata, at the top (can be avoided).

Note that altitude strongly influences your usual physical fitness.

You will get acquainted with the Valsavarenche valley in the Gran Paradiso National Park by tackling the via ferrata located near the hamlet of Degioz . You will discover rope handling and learn how to move on a via ferrata, which will allow you to feel comfortable on the summit of Gran Paradiso the next day in the rocky section at 4000 meters altitude.

After lunch at the summit, we'll descend to the starting point of the trail to the Chabod refuge, a 10-minute drive from Degioz. The ascent is on foot via a beautiful path and takes approximately two hours, allowing us to arrive at the refuge early enough to collect our crampons and ice axes. With your guide, you'll learn how to adjust your crampons so your equipment is ready for the next day. We'll go to bed quite early tomorrow, as the wake-up call is rather early; your guide will give you the exact time depending on the weather and the group's fitness level.

The program and destination were great. Our guide, Danilo, the head of Esprit Montagne, was really unpleasant. He had no teaching skills and didn't share his passion (it was his job). Luckily, we were with friends to share the experience, otherwise it could have been very unpleasant. We spent 48 hours with him, and he didn't ask our names for the trip. He made it clear he didn't like being asked questions. He supervised us, but that was all he did. It's such a shame, especially since the trip is advertised as a discovery and introduction to mountaineering; we learned absolutely nothing over the weekend. I wouldn't recommend this guide to anyone because he's not suited to ensuring a successful and enjoyable experience.

Decathlon Travel's response
Translated from French

Hello Silvain,

Thank you for your feedback. We are delighted that you enjoyed the destination, but sorry that the support did not meet your expectations.

This trip aims to introduce mountaineering in a structured and accessible environment. We regret that the human connection and teaching approach were not as effective for you. The guide mentioned very difficult weather conditions (strong gusts, poor visibility) which required particular attention to safety, and this may have limited interaction.

Your feedback is valuable in helping us continue to improve our experiences.

A fantastic trip to get started in mountaineering, especially for 4,000-meter peaks. The via ferrata is very short, but it provides a safe final section. The mountain hut is great for beginners, equipped with showers and the food is quite good. The guide was excellent, and this 4,000-meter peak is perfect for discovering the different aspects of mountaineering (ice, snow, rock) and is easily doable for someone who hikes every weekend. My first trip with Decathlon, and I highly recommend it.

Overall, I was disappointed. The view was exceptional, but we had to climb very quickly and descend very quickly. We didn't feel like we'd climbed a 4000-meter peak. We didn't even stay five minutes on the summit. There were very few breaks, and the few breaks we did take were too short—just the bare minimum of a quick bite to eat and a drink. We hadn't even had our packs on our shoulders before the guide was already pulling on the rope… This isn't the spirit of the mountains we have in mind.

Hello Kevin,

Thank you for your feedback following the climb. We are pleased that the view impressed you, but we regret that the fast pace and the limited time spent at the summit restricted your enjoyment.

In the high mountains, guides sometimes have to speed up the pace and shorten breaks to maintain safety. However, we understand your frustration and take note of your comments, so we can work with our partners to find a better balance between safety and the overall experience.

We hope that you will nevertheless retain good memories of this adventure and would be delighted to accompany you for a future sporting experience.
