Many are surprised to learn that the biggest challenge in reaching Everest Base Camp isn't the trek itself, but the journey to and from Lukla—especially during peak seasons. From mid-September to mid-December and mid-March to mid-May , all flights to Lukla operate from Ramechhap Airport , about 135 km from Kathmandu, requiring a 5-hour drive on a bumpy road.
As there are no alternative flight routes during these times, most trekkers must travel via Ramechhap. The main challenge is the unpredictable weather , which often leads to flight delays or cancellations , as Lukla flights are entirely weather-dependent .
We aim to fly on Day 2 of the itinerary and will wait at the airport until 1:30 PM . If flying is not possible, we return to our accommodation in Ramechhap for the night and try again the next morning.
If flights are still grounded, helicopter services (optional charges apply) may be considered, subject to availability and group agreement. Helicopter costs are high and depend on demand .
If flying isn't an option and the group declines a helicopter, we'll arrange an alternative trek , most likely in the Annapurna region .
We kindly ask all trekkers to stay flexible and prepared for last-minute changes, as these challenges are a natural part of Himalayan adventures.
