The quintessential Nepalese dish is 'dal bhat', rice and lentils, accompanied by some spiced vegetables. In Kathmandu, it is possible to eat a wide variety of dishes, but in the mountains, the choice is much more limited: the lodges (local guesthouses) offer menus that are all similar and not very varied (e.g. dal bhat, stir-fried noodles, momos, fried rice, pasta with tomato sauce, stir-fried potatoes).
Regarding our group trips:
Three meals and an afternoon snack will be served daily. On days with long walks, you will also receive supplementary energy in the form of trail snacks (cereal bars and/or dried fruit).
During lodge treks, we strive to offer you the most varied meals possible, using dishes or ingredients available at the lodges. A few examples include: dal bhat (the daily Nepalese meal), vegetable fried rice, potatoes with cheese, fries, pasta with tomato sauce, and sometimes even pizza! Please note that meat is rare and not recommended for Western stomachs.
Here is an example of the meals served on our trips:
- Breakfast: toast, pancake or Tibetan bread alternating with butter/jam/honey + eggs + tea or coffee.
- Lunch: a main course.
- A small snack is offered at the end of the stage (biscuits and tea).
- Dinner: soup as a starter, a main course, and a dessert (e.g., fruit in syrup)
+ A cup of tea and/or coffee is offered with every meal.
In Kathmandu, we often leave meals open so that everyone can enjoy the variety of restaurants in the capital according to their tastes.
In the mountains, you can fill your water bottles from taps or springs (as advised by your guide), but it is essential to filter the water or treat it with purification tablets (such as Micropur). Bottled mineral water is also available for purchase in lodges, towns, and restaurants. However, we kindly ask you to limit your plastic consumption: there is no recycling available locally.
