    Mountaineering

    Beginner
Mountaineering is a demanding sport; consequently, there is no "beginner" physical level for it. If you have never mountaineered before, you can aim for an intermediate or advanced level.
    Intermediate
For fit hikers who wish to experience the high mountains. No specific mountaineering skills are required; the crampon work is straightforward. Guides are on hand to provide instruction and ensure your safety. The daily elevation gain generally ranges from 700 to a maximum of 1,000 meters.
    Confirmed
For those who engage in endurance or mountain sports (running, cycling, trail running, rock climbing, trekking, etc.) three or more times a week. You are capable of hiking for long hours in the mountains and ascending around 1,500 meters in a single day. Ideally, you have some prior high-altitude experience (such as walking in crampons), though this is not essential if you are in excellent physical condition. To aid acclimatization, it is recommended to go mountain hiking in the days leading up to the trip.
    Advanced
For those who regularly practice endurance or mountain sports (running, cycling, trail running, rock climbing, trekking, etc.)—at least four times a week. You are capable of hiking for over eight hours in the mountains and ascending between 1,500 and 2,000 vertical meters in a single day. You have mastered crampon techniques. Prior mountaineering experience (ascents or ice training) is mandatory.
    Expert
For those in excellent physical condition who regularly engage in mountain activities (rock climbing, mountaineering, ice climbing, etc.): you have mastered mountaineering techniques and are capable of undertaking climbs rated D or higher.

Overall, a very good stay. Just one small drawback: water is chargeable at the refuge.

Good morning,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your feedback! We are delighted to read that you had a very good stay overall and that the adventure was wonderful.

Regarding the minor drawback you mentioned, we completely understand that it might seem surprising at first. However, water management in the high mountains is a real challenge: mountain huts are not connected to the mains drinking water supply like those in the valleys. Water is a precious commodity there and must either be airlifted in bottles or treated on-site using complex filtration systems. This explains why it is not free.

It's all about total immersion in nature, but we'll make sure this logistical information is even better highlighted in our travel journals to avoid any surprises on future climbs!

Thank you again for your trust and we would be delighted to support you in your next sporting challenge.

From a sporting perspective,

C

Magnificent landscapes, stunning setting, top-notch refuge! Only one small drawback: the Monte Rosa tour with Mountains Expedition, a bit rushed! 20 minutes in total for the longest break, for lunch (time to remove crampons and pack, untie the rope and harness, go into the refuge, take off gear, use the restroom and put everything back on, re-rope, and put crampons back on – barely enough time to eat a quick sandwich), and less than 5 minutes at the summits of the other points of interest... I would have preferred to climb fewer peaks but be able to admire and contemplate the view for at least 2 minutes at the summit, without worrying about not having time to eat an energy bar or drink water if I took a photo... I understand that sometimes the weather conditions are difficult and you can't linger, but after so much effort and elevation gain, I would have liked to be able to admire the view for more than 30 seconds sometimes… Even if it means climbing fewer peaks during the day, I'll enjoy landscapes that I might only see once in my life.

Hello Catherine,

Thank you so much for your feedback! We're absolutely delighted to read that the scenery and the refuge were breathtaking. Monte Rosa is truly an incredible experience, that's for sure.

However, we completely understand your frustration with the "timed" aspect of the breaks. When you make such an effort, you want to enjoy the view!

To be perfectly honest, another group set off at the exact same time as you on the same route, and for them, the pace was more relaxed. In the high mountains, it sometimes comes down to very little: a rope team moving slightly slower, a delayed departure time, or a guide who senses the weather changing and decides to push ahead to ensure everyone's safety.

We understand that sometimes it's better to skip a summit and take the time to breathe and appreciate where you are. We'll pass this message directly to the guides so they keep this in mind as soon as conditions allow.

We hope you still have some great memories (and some beautiful photos!) to cherish. See you soon for more adventures, and we promise we'll try to book a little more time at the summit next time!

See you soon,

Gwen

The other participants weren't up to the task for reasons known before the trip (one lacked the necessary physical fitness, another had a knee injury, and the last lacked motivation), which led to one withdrawal on the second day and three on the third (out of four participants). The uncertainty of not being able to complete the planned itinerary is frustrating and disappointing, given the time and money required for mountaineering. The guide helped me develop my knowledge and experience of high-altitude mountaineering with excellent advice throughout the trip, despite a gloomy and unenthusiastic atmosphere within the group. Fortunately, I was still able to complete the planned itinerary (Gnifetti Peak, Vincent Pyramid, and Giordani Peak). The Mantova refuge is very good. I would consider repeating the experience with Decathlon Travel, but I would inquire about the participants' ages and the guide beforehand.

Hello Clotilde,

Thank you for your detailed feedback. We are sorry that group dynamics negatively impacted your experience, despite the successful completion of the climb.

Our trips are open to anyone meeting the skill level criteria indicated on the information sheet. The guide has therefore had to adapt the itinerary accordingly, but this will not prevent you from completing the program.

We are passing on your comment about the age of the participants to our team, in order to see how we can better inform them in the future.

Well done for your commitment to the mountains, and thank you again for your trust.

A truly wonderful high-mountain experience. Even after previous notable experiences, the weather conditions and the guide's expertise allowed me to further develop my knowledge of high-mountain terrain, including walking with crampons on all types of ground (snow, ice, and rock), and rope team formation. An experienced, patient, and skilled guide from the Valdostan region. 😊 A must-do for beginners or experienced climbers, with the ascent to the Margherita hut and Punta Jordani.

The Monte Rosa massif is a beautiful destination, but very crowded. The only downside to the trip was the guide, who, while professional, was very unsociable, even grumpy!
