In a few words

Between the Hautes-Alpes and the Vaucluse , the Durance cycle route (V862) offers a spectacular 438 km cycling journey along the river. Your route begins in Briançon , a fortified city listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site , not far from the river's source perched at the Montgenèvre pass.

This cycling tour, alternating between safe cycle paths and shared roads, first takes you into the heart of magnificent Alpine landscapes. You cycle towards Embrun , admiring the majestic citadel of Mont-Dauphin along the way. The route then climbs to offer breathtaking panoramic views overlooking Lake Serre-Ponçon , before reaching Gap and then Sisteron , the famous gateway to Provence.

As the kilometers pass, the landscape softens. The rugged peaks gradually give way to the gentle plains of farmland, orchards , and fragrant lavender fields. An ideal getaway for cycling enthusiasts seeking wide-open spaces, perfectly blending mountain heritage, Provençal culture, and immersion in nature.

The highlights

  • The Durance cycle route benefits from numerous train stations along the way.
  • Continuity facilitated thanks to the rail links of the Upper Durance
  • A route adaptable in four stages: Mont-Dauphin, Embrun, Gap and Sisteron
