The Fisterra Way (direct) in 6 days

You will leave Santiago de Compostela from the Plaza del Obradoiro, heading towards one of the most beautiful spots on this route: Ponte Maceira. To get there, you will have to climb the Alto do Mar de Ovellas from Augapesada. This climb, demanding but shaded by a magnificent oak forest, requires some effort, which is richly rewarded at the top.

At Ponte Maceira, you'll discover its spectacular medieval bridge spanning the Tambre River. Continuing along the route, you'll soon reach Negreira, a town offering all the necessary amenities and the traditional stop for this first day.

On this third day, you will walk one of the most beautiful stages of this Way—and also the longest. The route leaves the asphalt and crosses magnificent forests of native species, where oaks, beeches, chestnut trees, and many others grow side by side. This stage is mostly uphill, especially in its first section.

Leaving Negreira, you will pass under the remarkable Pazo de Cotón , built in the 15th century on the old Royal Road and which still retains its defensive character today.

After leaving the hamlet of Santa Mariña behind, you will begin the ascent of Monte Aro, from where you will enjoy superb panoramic views of the banks of the A Fervenza reservoir. You will then descend into the Xallas valley until you cross the Ponte Olveira bridge, before arriving at the village of Olveiroa, where magnificent restored centuries-old hórreos (traditional stone huts) still stand.

The fourth day begins with a gradual climb from Olveiroa to Hospital. It is here that the Camino splits: one branch heads towards Muxía, while the other leads directly to Cee. You will take the latter to continue your journey to Fisterra.

You will then begin a long descent towards Cee, the first town with a truly maritime character. Opening onto the Corcubión bay, it is now the largest town in this part of the Costa da Morte.

During this final stage of the Fisterra Way, you will travel the shortest section of the route, in order to compensate for the efforts of the previous day.

You will leave Cee following the coastline and cross the nearby historic town of Corcubión. From there, the Way temporarily leaves the coast to cross the rise in elevation, before quickly returning to the shore, which it will not leave again between Estorde and Fisterra.

The rest of the stage is a succession of wild landscapes and beaches, with the Corcubión estuary—called the Inland Sea ( Mar de Dentro ) here—always on your left. If it's hot, one of the great pleasures is swimming at Langosteira beach before reaching Fisterra, located at its far end. From the village, it's just a three-kilometer climb up the road leading to the famous lighthouse, but it's best to recharge your batteries beforehand.

A tip: if the sky is clear, the best time to climb to the lighthouse is in the late afternoon, to witness the spectacle of the last ray of sunlight visible in Europe. It was to contemplate this moment that, since antiquity, travelers from all over the continent, guided by their worship of the sun, undertook this pilgrimage. Even today, thousands of walkers continue their journey to the ends of the earth to experience this.

Since time immemorial, Fisterra has been considered the westernmost point of Europe. Beyond its rugged shores lies the vast ocean or, as the ancient Romans called it, the Mare Tenebrosum , the sea of ​​darkness.

We recommend taking the time to explore its fish market, stroll through its harbor, and savor its exceptional seafood. Don't miss the Maritime Museum, the Church of the Virxe das Areas, and, of course, the area surrounding the spectacular lighthouse.

The city also offers boat trips with underwater viewing as well as excellent diving opportunities in the waters of the Atlantic.
