The Autumn Trilogy - Sommarøy, Senja and Tromsø

Pick-up in the morning in the centre of Tromsø. You join a passionate local guide for an off-the-beaten-path hike in the mountains surrounding the city (often on the wild island of Kvaløya).

The guide chooses the best summit based on the day's weather and shares their knowledge of the local wildlife, autumn flora, and history. It's a perfect and safe introduction to begin your outdoor adventure.

The rest of the day is free to relax after the exertion. They can take the opportunity to visit the famous Arctic Cathedral (accessible on foot via the large bridge spanning the fjord) or visit the Polaria Museum to learn more about the Arctic marine ecosystem.

Pick up your rental car directly from an agency in Tromsø city centre.

Departure for the road trip west towards the island of Kvaløya, then the small paradise peninsula of Sommarøy . The road (approximately 1 hour 15 minutes of pure driving) is magnificent and crosses wild glacial valleys bordered by fjords.

Just before crossing the bridge to Sommarøy, you stop at the Ørnfløya hiking car park.

This is the perfect little hike to break up the journey. The trail climbs gently through the autumnal tundra ablaze with russet hues. Reaching the summit, the reward is incredible: a breathtaking 360° view overlooking the fishing village of Sommarøy, its white sand beaches, and the Atlantic Ocean dotted with islets.

Free time to stroll on the white sand beaches with turquoise waters (which have a Caribbean feel, minus the temperature!) and explore this very authentic fishing village.

Get ready for an adrenaline rush! Guided by the local team, you'll experience the ultimate ice bath in the pristine waters of the Arctic. It's an incredible energy booster, ideal for muscle recovery after the previous days.

After the thrill, it's time to relax. You settle down at the farm for a homemade, convivial lunch prepared with local and organic farm produce. A truly warm Norwegian break.

After the meal, you take the road south of Kvaløya, towards the port of Brensholmen.

This is the northern gateway to Senja Island. The crossing takes approximately 45 minutes. From the boat's deck, the autumn scenery and the approach to Senja's steep cliffs are spectacular.

The jewel of Senja. While Segla is the most famous peak, Hesten is the better choice as it offers the most spectacular view... of the vertiginous cliff of Segla itself.

2. Duration: 3 to 4 hours round trip.
3. Intensity: Moderate to difficult (approximately 500m of positive elevation gain).

The climb through the shrubby tundra is a festival of yellow and orange colors. Upon reaching the ridge, the contrast between the dark rock, the deep blue of the fjord, and the surrounding peaks is striking.

Safety option: If the wind is blowing too hard on the Hesten ridge, opt for the Sukkertoppen to Hamn hike, which is a little more sheltered but just as panoramic.

Then, after the exertion, take the scenic route and make a photo stop at Tungeneset. Walk on the wooden walkways to admire the "Devil's Teeth" (Ersfjordstranda), these sharp peaks that plunge into the ocean.

After the intense effort of the previous day, this sixth day is perfect for taking it easy and discovering Senja from another angle, at water level, before giving yourself a well-deserved rest.

Equipped with a dry suit provided by the guides, you glide on incredibly clear turquoise waters, winding between a multitude of small islands and islets with white sand beaches.

From your kayak, the contrast is striking between the calm water, the gentle golden tundra along the banks, and the verticality of the dark mountains (often capped with mist or frost) that plunge directly into the ocean. Your guides will share stories about the local wildlife (seals, sea eagles) and the history of the island's fishermen.

In the afternoon, it's time to relax - Take a very easy walk (without elevation gain) along the Mefjordvær seawall or settle down with a book and a hot coffee near a large bay window facing the sea to watch the autumn light slowly decline.

For this last day of your road trip, you leave the wild nature of Senja to rediscover the cultural effervescence of Tromsø, the "Paris of the North".

Allow approximately 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes of driving time from the west coast of Senja (Hamn/Mefjordvær) to reach Finnsnes. The road crosses the island's interior, offering more hilly and wooded autumn landscapes.

Once you arrive in the heart of Tromsø city centre, enjoy the afternoon for a city atmosphere that is both urban and relaxing.

Returning your rental car

If the sky is clear for your last night, you don't need to go far. Hike to Lake Prestvannet (in the hills above the city, accessible by bus or on foot) or take the Fjellheisen cable car if it's running in the evening. Seeing the lights of Tromsø and potentially the Northern Lights from the summit of Mount Storsteinen is the most beautiful way to end your Norwegian adventure.
