The expert's opinion

The difficulty of the circuit is not so much the elevation gain but more the comfort of the accommodations, the rather mineral path and the impossibility of having your luggage transferred every evening.

This trip is for you if you are already an experienced hiker with good physical fitness to endure a long-duration effort!

The hikes offered take place on mountain trails with elevation gains of 700 to 1200 meters, and/or losses, without any particular technical difficulties. Expect approximately 6 to 7 hours of walking per day.

The level corresponds to an average cumulative elevation gain over the entire week. We also use other factors such as luggage carrying, commitment, network availability, and terrain type to refine the level.

Regarding the calculation of the elevation difference, this comes either from a field survey or from a calculation according to a computer model.

If you take your own measurements, it's not uncommon to find discrepancies with our description. The average difference can be up to 10%, particularly in flat areas with little significant relief, and in steep areas with too much relief (ravine, cliff).

Note

We may sometimes be obliged to modify the indicated itinerary somewhat (problem of overbooked accommodations, trail conditions, persistent snow, etc.).
In early summer, snow patches can be dangerous on many parts of the route. Some snowy and steep sections may require the use of a rope, or even an ice axe. If your safety is at risk, it is sometimes wiser to turn back or abandon the day's hike.
The storms in the Mercantour are renowned for their violence and must also be taken seriously into account when planning your hike.
