You will take the train from Helsinki city centre to Kuopio. A 4-hour journey by local transport that will immediately put you in "slow travel" mode in this vast, sparsely populated country where nature dominates and where calm often reigns.

Kuopio, the largest city in the Lake District, offers a true immersion in the Finnish way of life. Enjoy a local specialty lunch such as Kalkukko (rye bread with fish), then stroll through the city center, discovering the monumental White Cathedral, and along the shores of Lake Kallavesi.

Pick up your rental vehicle near the train station.

Located 5 minutes from the city centre, the Puijo tower, an emblem of the city, offers an exceptional panorama of the endless maze of forests and lakes in the region.

Route towards Kuhmo. Passing through Nurmes, known for its Karelian heritage and its collection of Puu-Nurmes wooden houses in the center of the village, which make it one of the most authentic villages in Finland.

Guided canoe trip on Lake Lentiira (duration approx. 3 hours)

Along the way, you will stop at a picturesque islet to enjoy a light snack while taking in the tranquil atmosphere of the place.

You are entering North Karelia, land of bards and poets and cradle of the Kanteletar, an oral art that gave birth to the founding myth of the Finnish people. Particularly renowned for their hospitality and joviality, the Karelians cultivate authentic traditions and heritage.

Karelia is a region renowned for its cuisine, based primarily on game and fish dishes, as well as foraged products (berries, mushrooms, flowers, and edible plants). Among its delicious local specialties, one of the most popular is the Karelian pie, which comes in both savory and sweet versions.

Before heading to your hotel, take a break at Koli National Park. Few places in Finland are as evocative, and the Koli National Landscape certainly offers one of the most beautiful panoramas in the country.

Several hikes suitable for all levels lead to breathtaking views of Lake Pielinen. We recommend the shorter 3km hike to the summit of Paha-Koli Hill (allow approximately 1.5 hours).

From your hotel you can also reach another viewpoint, Ukko-Koli (approximately 5 km, 2 hours round trip).

The Great Saimaa lake system, a labyrinth of lakes and rivers, stretches out like a veritable inland sea. The lakes cover one-tenth of Finland's territory!

Let yourself be charmed by the friendly atmosphere of Joensuu, a charming city in the heart of North Karelia. Stroll through the cobbled streets of the historic center, and enjoy lunch with a local specialty such as Leipäjuusto (a cheese for grilling).

In Karelia, Orthodox traditions are deeply rooted in the local culture. The beautiful Orthodox church you can admire in Joensuu is a testament to this.

During the summer season, take advantage of the Midnight Sun and long days to appreciate the peace and disconnection that Finnish nature will provide.

Welcome to Linnansaari National Park, home to endemic wildlife, including the Saimaa ringed seal, one of only 3 species of freshwater seals in the world.

Lake cruise and wildlife observation – The Saimaa seal

On this seal-watching safari, you'll venture into the heart of the national park, home to the osprey, beaver, and the endangered Saimaa ringed seal. You'll be accompanied by an expert wildlife guide familiar with the lake's flora and fauna. The excursion takes place at sunset on an open boat, allowing for optimal wildlife viewing. Coffee/tea and a sweet snack will also be provided during the safari.

The Lake District, also known as the "Land of a Thousand Lakes," covers approximately 25% of the country, a vast area where endless forests blend seamlessly with thousands of lakes of all sizes. It's easy to see why Finland and its people draw their strength from nature, and there's even a term for it: "Sisu."

Don't hesitate to make a slight detour to the Valamo Orthodox Monastery, a magnificent Byzantine-style building nestled in nature. Renowned throughout Finland, particularly for its distillery which produces wines and spirits, a visit to the monastery (not included) is highly recommended. You can also simply enjoy a pleasant walk in the surrounding area, a meal at the specialty restaurant, or the shop where you can purchase local specialties and drinks.

Arrival in the Finnish capital in the early or mid-afternoon. Check-in at your hotel in the city centre, very close to the train station.

Depending on the time you have available, continue exploring the city at your own pace.

For your shopping, the Design District brings together creative studios, boutiques selling contemporary and vintage items, as well as numerous cafes and bars, making it one of the most pleasant neighborhoods for strolling. Discover Helsinki off the beaten track by exploring the bohemian-style Kallio district, and in particular the picturesque Torkkelinmäki neighborhood.

For a cultural getaway, the Suomenlinna Sea Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of Finland's most popular tourist attractions. Located on one of the islands in the archipelago in Helsinki harbor, it's just a 15-minute walk from the city center.
