The Bec of the Orient

A day in the great outdoors begins with a hearty mountain breakfast of country bread and organic homemade jams, local honey, cheeses, and other regional delicacies. We're now all set for our first hike! To warm up, we head towards the ridges bordering the Autrans plateau . Our trail winds through a beautiful, lush spruce forest, typical of the Pre-Alps. What follows is pure bliss: along a ridgeline, we hike from the Pas de la Clé to the Bec de l'Orient, where the Chartreuse mountains and the Isère valley unfold before us. Our guide will tell us the story of these "passes" which were once used to transport logs down the valley for the construction of Louis XIV's fleet. We'll enjoy a peaceful break near Nave, a pleasant meadow carpeted with vibrant fireweed and wild raspberries.
Back in our "base camp": a welcome moment of relaxation in the wellness area (unlimited access) located in the heart of the flower garden of the guesthouse-hotel .

Today we're climbing one of the iconic peaks of the Pays des Quatre Montagnes (Land of the Four Mountains). At 1,901 meters, the Moucherotte rises like a rocky promontory overlooking the surrounding valleys. It marks the beginning of this impressive chain of ridges that runs from north to south for nearly 60 kilometers, giving the Vercors the appearance of a "French Dolomites." As we gain altitude, the vegetation becomes sparser, giving way to vast, beautiful, slender plateaus. From here, we have an unobstructed view of the entire Vercors. We can then list its many peaks and trace the history of the seven regions that comprise it.

The Balconies of the Bourne

Our guide leads us to discover a more secluded side of the Vercors, through ancient hamlets and along paths forgotten by time. Walking towards the hamlet of Méaudret , we discuss life in bygone days and the inhabitants who shaped the Vercors' magnificent open landscapes through agriculture and forestry. The old buildings with their slate roofs bear witness to this rural and agricultural past. We then continue along a superb balcony path overlooking the legendary Bourne Gorges . What a change of scenery! Finally, we reach Gros Martel (1,556 m). This summit, with its rather rustic name, offers us an unobstructed view of the striking Gerbier ridge, dominated by the Roc Cornafion.

Take the train toGrenoble
Train/TGV to Grenoble then bus to Méaudre.
Regular buses “CARS RÉGION”: line T64 to “Lans-en-Vercors Tourist Office” then T66 to “Méaudre Place”.
Purchase of the transport ticket at the Bus Station (not reservable).
We will pick you up from the bus that leaves Grenoble at 5:00 PM and arrives at Méaudre Place at 6:21 PM. Please let us know in advance if you need to take a different bus.

- From the North - Grenoble : From the A48 towards Grenoble, take exit 14 “St Egrève Sassenage Villard-de-Lans”. In Lans-en-Vercors, follow signs for Autrans. At the bottom of the Col de la Croix Perrin, turn left towards Méaudre and continue for 1 km.
- From the South - Valence : From the A49 towards Grenoble, take exit 8 "Aire Royans-Vercors, Villard de Lans". Follow signs for Villard-de-Lans. At the end of the Bourne gorges, turn left towards Méaudre. The gîte is 3 km past the village.
The guesthouse-hotel has free private parking.
