In a few words

This secluded route begins at Shira Gate , at an altitude of 3,600 meters , high on the Shira Plateau . It quickly joins the classic Lemosho route at Shira Camp 2 , but offers an unusual start, reserved for hikers already acclimatized to high altitude. This abrupt beginning, without a gradual transition phase, can lead to the effects of acute mountain sickness from the very first day.

Despite this drawback, the route is appealing due to its tranquility , far from the hustle and bustle of more frequented trails. It crosses spectacular volcanic landscapes , skirts the Kibo dome via the southern circuit , passing through Lava Tower and the majestic Barranco Valley, before reaching Barafu Camp for a final ascent to the mythical summit of Uhuru Peak .

Less traveled, this route offers a wilder and more immersive Kilimanjaro experience, ideal for hikers seeking solitude and technical challenges . It also allows for exploring several variations depending on conditions, with exceptional views of the Tanzanian highlands .

The highlights

  • A wild and secluded route on the heights of the Shira plateau
  • Starting point at 3,600 m for hikers already acclimatized to high altitude
  • A technical and immersive ascent to Uhuru Peak, the roof of Africa

Security

Safety is our top priority. In the event of severe acute mountain sickness or any other emergency, we have protocols in place to respond quickly:

Trained guides: Our guides are certified Wilderness First Responders (WFR), trained to recognize the symptoms of altitude sickness and provide first aid.

Portable oxygen: oxygen cylinders are carried and can be administered in case of distress.

Communication: the guides have satellite phones or radios to communicate immediately with our base and emergency services.

Evacuation procedures: if necessary, we arrange a rapid evacuation by stretcher carried by porters to the nearest medical center or a rescue by helicopter (in rare cases).

Emergency medical kit: complete first aid kits accompany each climb.

24/7 assistance: our operational team is monitoring the trek remotely to provide additional support if needed.

Note

The Shira Route is a little-used trail that begins near the Shira Ridge. It is almost identical to the Lemosho Route. In fact, Shira was the original route, and Lemosho is an improved version. This route is sometimes called the Lemosho Route with a "high-altitude starting point."
