Start at Shira 1 Camp (3,610 m / 11,843 ft) and hike to Shira 2 Camp (3,850 m / 12,631 ft) , the second high-altitude camp. This section of the hike is relatively easy and offers spectacular views of the African savanna, Kilimanjaro's unique flora, and the surrounding area. Weather permitting, Shira 2 Camp is one of the best vantage points for admiring Mount Meru , Africa's fifth-highest peak and the second-highest in Tanzania.
During the hike, you'll have the opportunity to climb Cathedral Peak (3,872 m / 12,703 ft) , one of the highest points on the ancient Shira volcano. This straightforward climb presents no technical difficulties and offers breathtaking views of the valley, often described as a "lost world." Although the summit can sometimes be obscured by clouds, it provides an excellent opportunity for memorable photos. If you prefer to skip this climb, or if the weather is unfavorable, you can hike directly to Shira Camp 2 without affecting your acclimatization, as both locations are at a similar altitude. Nevertheless, the hike to Cathedral Peak is highly recommended.
Upon arrival at Shira 2 camp, enjoy lunch , followed by a two-hour break. Then, set off on an acclimatization hike towards Lava Tower Camp , gaining 300 m (984 ft) in altitude.
