For picnics:

  1. fabric bags and towels
  2. boxes for soups and salads
  3. spoons

  1. bath towels

Equipment to bring

  1. A medium-sized backpack (30 to 40 liters) for the day's essentials (water bottle, warm clothes, binoculars, camera, etc.) and a picnic lunch. Straps for attaching snowshoes are often a welcome addition.
  2. a rain cover to protect belongings in case of snowfall
  3. an insulated water bottle preferably (1.5 liters minimum)

  5. a pair of highly protective sunglasses
  6. a tube of sunscreen and a lip balm, both very protective

Clothing to bring

To protect yourself from the winter chill, the best method is the "layering" approach: adjust your temperature by wearing layers of clothing that aren't too warm , so you don't sweat too much. We recommend choosing garments made from natural merino fibers, which are warm, breathable, and odor-resistant should you perspire.

For hiking:

  1. warm, waterproof trousers or lighter trousers and tights
  2. a Gore-Tex type windbreaker
  3. A down jacket to protect against the most biting cold.
  4. a not-too-thick sweater, possibly fleece or merino wool.
  5. Warm and quick-drying underwear (tights, long-sleeved t-shirts, etc.), perhaps made of merino wool.
  6. a warm hat that protects the ears well
  7. a cap or other hat to protect you from the sun
  8. two pairs of gloves, thin ones and warm, waterproof "snow" gloves (or mittens)
  9. Gaiters are recommended if the snow pants don't have good elastic and/or hooks to stay on the boot.

For the evening:

  1. 2 to 3 pairs of warm socks
  2. spare clothes
  3. indoor shoes or slippers
  4. a pharmacy, with the necessary supplies to treat everyday minor ailments, think about possible foot care (Compeed, strapping and other dressings), and of course your personal treatments.
  5. toiletries

We had a fantastic guide, Ugo, who took us on some lovely walks with wonderful explanations about the surrounding nature. We were lucky to have plenty of snow during our stay! We also had great contact with *** (Vincent treated us to some delicious cakes). The owners of the Arpelin hotel were very welcoming, and we enjoyed a delicious local leg of lamb as well as other tasty dishes. Thank you all!

We had a great group of snowshoers and a very kind guide, Vincent. The scenery was magnificent. The sun shone throughout our stay. There was plenty of snow for snowshoeing, and it was bitterly cold. Overall, I had a good trip. However, there was one drawback regarding the hostel. The room was basic and could be improved, and breakfast and dinner were disappointing. There was no fruit or cheese available during our entire stay, and very few vegetables. Fortunately, the daily picnic lunch was the best meal of the week.

Decathlon Travel's response

Hello Nadia,

Thank you for your feedback. We are delighted that you had a great stay with Vincent and that you enjoyed the scenery and our picnics.

We have taken note of your comments regarding the accommodation and meals. L'Arpelin is a mountain lodge that prioritizes simplicity, but we regret that the variety of meals was not up to standard. Our partners, who recently established themselves, have faced record occupancy rates, and we have already worked with them on corrective measures to ensure a better quality of service.

Thank you for your trust and see you soon for new adventures.
