In a few words

Starting from Bangkok , this 6-day journey takes you to the heart of the Umphang Nature Sanctuary , one of Thailand's wildest and most pristine regions, bordering Myanmar. After an overnight drive to Mae Sot , a spectacular mountain road winds through Tak Province, offering a gradual immersion into untouched nature.

The adventure continues in the Karen village of Palatha , where you'll share the daily life of a host family during two nights in an authentic homestay . Between traditional cooking , discovering handcrafted weaving , and interacting with the community, this stop offers a rare cultural immersion.

The highlight of the trip remains the trekking in the jungle , in search of elephants roaming freely in their natural habitat. Observation is carried out with complete respect for the animals, guided by a responsible approach that promotes their rehabilitation in the wild .

The expedition continues with a raft trip down the river , before reaching the spectacular Thi Lor Su waterfall , the largest in Southeast Asia. A night in a tent in the national park , in the heart of the forest, concludes this immersive experience.

An original and itinerant route, linking Bangkok, Mae Sot and Chiang Mai , ideal for travelers in search of deep nature, authentic encounters and committed adventure .

Supervisor

The groups are accompanied by an English-speaking guide from Mae Sot to Mae Sot for the entire stay (days 2 to 6), ensuring logistical coordination and cultural mediation throughout the journey.

On the ground (forest trekking, elephant watching, rafting) supervision is also provided by local Karen guides who are perfectly familiar with their natural environment, with a very limited level of English.

Homestay accommodation is managed directly by host families in the village of Palatha, who prepare meals and share their daily lives with travelers. Communication with hosts is primarily through the accompanying guide.

Management

Security

This trip is based on a partnership between three complementary actors, designed to guarantee both the safety of travelers and respect for the natural and human environment.

Our partner agency provides end-to-end logistical coordination: transfers, accommodation, English-speaking guide accompanying from Mae Sot to Mae Sot, and operational monitoring of the group throughout the journey.

She manages the homestay in the Karen village of Palatha and coordinates the elephant watching sessions. The mahouts, guardians and specialists in the behavior of their elephants, accompany each outing in the forest and guide travelers in a respectful and safe manner.

The rangers of Umphang National Park are present alongside the mahouts during every wildlife viewing. Their role is twofold: protecting travelers in a wild environment, and ensuring compliance with the regulations of the wildlife sanctuary.

This system ensures professional support at every stage, in a remote area where mastery of the terrain and knowledge of the natural environment are essential.

From Bangkok to Mae Sot by Night Bus

    • Transportation Bus - 10h - 490km
    • Breakfast not included
    • Lunch not included
    • Dinner not included

Night falls on Bangkok, and the adventure begins. A van picks you up to navigate the bustling evening traffic towards Mo Chit, the main bus terminal in the north of the capital. Here you'll meet up with your group of travelers from all corners of the world, united by the same desire to discover what Thailand has to offer, far from the beaten path.

You board your night bus to Mae Sot (reclining seats, air conditioning). While sleeping, you unknowingly cross two worlds: the sprawling outskirts of Bangkok gradually give way to the plains of central Thailand, before the road begins to climb towards the first hills of Tak province.

Mae Sot, a border town with Myanmar, remains largely unknown to most foreign travelers. And that's precisely what makes it an ideal starting point for what awaits you!

    Day 1

Note

This adventure does not operate from June to September, the monsoon season in the Tak region. These months of closure are intentional: they allow the forest and rivers of Umphang to regenerate, and the elephants to roam undisturbed without human presence. This decision is consistent with the responsible approach of all those involved.

The rest of the year is divided into two ideal seasons. From October to February, it's the cool, dry season: pleasant temperatures, clear skies, lush green forests after the rains, and Thi Lor Su at its most spectacular. This is the high season and the best time to fully enjoy all the activities. From March to May, the hot, dry season offers sunny days and low, crystal-clear river waters, perfect for rafting and swimming at waterfalls.
