In a few words

A polar expedition into the heart of wild Iceland, where fire and ice sculpt the landscapes. Nordic skiing in Iceland, pulka slung over our waists, we traverse the Fjallabak highlands in winter, all the way to the geothermal gem of Landmannalaugar. A self-supported, nomadic adventure in a stark, icy landscape where humankind is merely a passing guest.

Each stage is a challenge: bivouacking in the white desert, pushing forward despite the wind, reading the shapes in the snow, observing craters, fumaroles, and rugged terrain. Nature here does not allow itself to be tamed: it imposes its own rhythm, demands vigilance, but in return offers moments of grace, an aurora borealis, a hot bath in the heart of the snow, or simply absolute silence.

This Nordic skiing trip to Iceland is more than just a sporting achievement. It's far more than a journey; it's an immersion in an extreme environment, a timeless interlude. An adventure that forges team spirit, reveals what truly matters, and invites you to reconnect with the raw beauty of the world. A physical challenge, certainly, but above all, a rare, powerful, and profoundly human experience that leaves you transformed.

The expert's opinion

Circuit characteristics

This 7-day expedition in the Icelandic highlands during winter immerses participants in a wild and extreme environment. Each day includes 5 to 8 hours of activity, with elevation gains of up to 600 meters, in sometimes harsh conditions: temperatures as low as -35°C, strong winds, heavy snow, and unpredictable weather. Undertaken in complete self-sufficiency, this trek demands a high level of physical and mental commitment, as well as a great capacity for adaptation to isolation and the elements.

Recommended physical preparation

Excellent physical condition is essential. This trip is designed for experienced athletes accustomed to prolonged exertion and challenging environments. Prior experience in Nordic treks or expeditions, as well as thorough preparation before departure, are strongly recommended.

Health and safety

Excellent health is required. As emergency evacuations are complex, the guide carries a first-aid kit and a satellite phone. A prior medical check-up is strongly advised.

Activity and life on an expedition

The trek progresses using Nordic touring skis on flat terrain and on foot when the terrain demands it. Each participant pulls their own pulka (approximately 40 kg), which increases the physical effort. Living in a tent in a polar environment requires a high degree of adaptability and a collaborative spirit. Cohesion, mutual support, and solidarity are essential.

For ages 18 and up.

Safety: Rigorous supervision in extreme environments

The Icelandic highlands in winter offer a landscape as spectacular as it is isolated. In this demanding environment, marked by a harsh climate and remoteness, safety relies on specific supervision and constant vigilance.

From the start of the expedition, your guide will present the safety rules to be followed, whether during the progression on Nordic skis or within the camp, not forgetting practical advice to better cope with the cold and optimize your comfort.

On the ground, the guide is your sole point of contact: with his knowledge of the destination, he alone is authorized to make the decisions necessary for the smooth running of the stay.

To ensure maximum safety, each guide has a satellite phone, providing a permanent link with our logistics base in Reykjavik.

Welcome to the heart of Iceland's wild landscapes.

Upon landing at Keflavik, the international airport on the Reykjanes Peninsula, an icy wind and the smell of sulfur immediately set the tone. The transfer to Reykjavik crosses a lunar-like landscape of lava fields, remnants of ancient volcanic eruptions.

In the Icelandic capital, the first immersion into the adventure: meeting with our group of adventurers and our guide, a true specialist in polar lands.

At the end of the day, it's time to prepare for the raid: sorting personal belongings, distributing and checking the group equipment. Our guide gives us an essential safety briefing: skiing techniques, managing the cold, how to use the pulkas, self-sufficiency, and living in a bivouac.

The night is spent in a cozy hostel, as excitement builds at the thought of setting off tomorrow towards the Icelandic highlands.

Note

The itinerary presented is for guidance only. It may be modified at any time by your guide depending on weather and logistical conditions, in order to guarantee your safety and that of the group. Distances, activity times, and routes may therefore change on the ground.

The Northern Lights are luminous phenomena that are as spectacular as they are unpredictable. Even near the Arctic Circle, their appearance depends on many factors beyond our control, including the intensity of solar activity and the clarity of the sky.

The remote nature of the route, combined with the expertise of your guide, maximizes your chances of witnessing them, but their appearance remains unpredictable and cannot be guaranteed.
