This five-day trek takes you far off the beaten track and into the heart of the jungle . In addition to enjoying a wealth of flora, fauna, snow-capped peaks and impressive valleys , hikers visit some of the last domains of the great Inca empire and traverse excellent examples of the Qhapaq Ñan – the royal roads of the Incas.
The route crosses the Cordillera de Vilcabamba , a sparsely populated region that closely resembles what it was when Hiram Bingham first explored it a century ago. This trek is not for the faint of heart or those with weak legs . It is a particularly demanding route with long days of walking and challenging ascents and descents .
The journey begins in Cuzco , the ancient capital of the Inca Empire. In addition to providing an opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture , these first two days will also help your body acclimatize before the actual trek begins.
The trek crosses three high mountain passes , each culminating at approximately 4,500 meters , before reaching Aguas Calientes and your visit to Machu Picchu .
