The expert's opinion

The 'authentic' Tour du Mont Blanc is a challenging hike. It involves a minimum elevation gain of 800 meters and a maximum of 1300 meters, averaging 6 to 8 hours of walking per day. Mountain trails are generally well-maintained, though some sections may be off-trail. A good level of fitness and regular exercise are recommended. Your adventure begins in the village of Le Tour , gateway to the wild landscapes of the Mont Blanc massif.

From the very first steps, the trail climbs gently through larch forests and verdant alpine pastures, where cows graze peacefully beneath the watchful gaze of snow-capped peaks. The ascent to the Col de Balme (2,191 m) marks your first border crossing, between France and Switzerland. Here, the panorama opens up to the Chamonix peaks, the Argentière Glacier, and the Swiss summits. A pause is essential to admire this natural spectacle before continuing towards the Alpage des Grands , a protected area where you might spot marmots or chamois.

The descent to the Trient springs is technical, with rocky sections and streams to cross, before reaching the Col de la Forclaz hotel (1,527 m) . This welcoming refuge, perched above the valley, offers breathtaking views of the stars once night falls.

A typical Savoyard dinner (tartiflette, diots, or crozets) awaits you to recover from this demanding first day.
