The expert's opinion

The hikes offered take place on mountain trails with elevation gains and losses of 700 to 1200 meters, without any particular technical difficulties. Expect approximately 6 to 7 hours of walking per day. This trip is ideal if you are already an experienced hiker and comfortable with level 3 terrain.

Well-marked trails with some rocky sections at higher altitudes. Early in the season, snow patches may persist on high passes.

The level corresponds to an average cumulative elevation gain over the entire week. We also use other factors such as luggage carrying, commitment, network availability, and terrain type to refine the level.

Regarding the calculation of the elevation gain, this is either based on a field survey or a calculation using a computer model. The calculation takes into account all variations in terrain, both uphill and downhill, and not just the difference in altitude between two points!

If you take your own measurements, it's not uncommon to find discrepancies with our description. The average difference can be up to 10%, especially in flat areas with little significant elevation change, and in steep areas with significant elevation changes (ravines, cliffs). It's also important to know that discrepancies can occur between different field tools: watches, phone apps, and GPS devices almost never give the same result.
