In a few words

The Salkantay trek traverses incredible landscapes, where the lowland jungle gives way to high-altitude alpine scenery and glacial mountains. It is a route of picturesque beauty.

Located northwest of Cusco, Nevado de Salkantay, the highest peak in the Andes, rises to 6,271 meters above sea level. The name Salkantay means "Wild Mountain," and it is a unique peak of striking beauty that serves as a major focal point for this route. The Salkantay to Machu Picchu trek has become popular with hikers wishing to combine a quieter, less-traveled route with a visit to the Inca ruins of Machu Picchu.

The journey begins in Cusco, the ancient capital of the Inca Empire. In addition to immersing yourself in the local culture, these first two days will also help your body acclimatize before the trek itself begins. The trek starts with a hike to Lake Humantay, a stunning turquoise glacial lake. The route crosses the Salkantay Pass at 4,600 meters before reaching Aguas Calientes and your visit to Machu Picchu.

The highlights

  • Much quieter than the classic Inca Trail
  • A challenging hike for mountain enthusiasts
  • Visit the incredible ruins of Machu Picchu
