With a climate as mild as its neighbors, the Canary Island of Gran Canaria offers a rich diversity to its inhabitants and visitors: verdant forests, palm groves in the valley bottoms, native flora and fauna, magnificent dune landscapes, dramatic mountain formations, volcanic calderas, occasional snow on the highest peaks, fertile valleys, a vibrant capital, and beautiful coastlines with spectacular beaches. Hiking on Gran Canaria is like discovering a microcosm of all the Canary Islands' landscapes! We first settle in Aguimes, on the eastern side of the island, for our first night. We begin our week near the Bandama volcano and the Guadadeque ravine with its caves, ancient shelters of the Canarios, the island's indigenous people. Our route then takes us to the heart of the island for a hike to Roque Nublo, a sacred 89-meter-high volcanic plug, an ancient volcanic vent, whose ridges offer spectacular views. Next, we continue to the Tejeda Valley and its beautiful, picturesque village before discovering Artenara and its cave dwellings. Then, we reach the charming Agaete Valley on the northwest coast, before concluding with another facet of the island in the far south: the Maspalomas Dunes Nature Reserve.
