Jebel Toubkal: Climbing the roof of North Africa
Jebel Toubkal is undoubtedly the star attraction of the High Atlas and an iconic challenge for hikers from all over the world. At 4,167 meters high , it dominates all of North Africa and offers, from its summit, an exceptional panorama of the Atlas mountain range and, on a clear day, as far as the edge of the Sahara.
The ascent of Toubkal usually takes two to three days, starting from the village of Imlil . On the first day, the trail leads to mountain huts located at approximately 3,200 meters altitude, where it is possible to spend the night. The following day, the final ascent to the summit is generally made before dawn to enjoy the sunrise.
Although the climb doesn't require any particular technical skills in summer, it remains a significant physical challenge due to the altitude and elevation gain. Good physical condition and adequate preparation are essential. In winter, the climb is more difficult due to the presence of snow and ice, necessitating the use of specific equipment such as crampons and an ice axe. Spring and autumn are generally the best seasons to attempt the climb, offering more favorable weather conditions.
