First time on a board: First surfing experience. Beginner: Has already taken a few lessons and knows how to catch whitewater waves. Progression: Masters the basics, progresses to unbroken waves (green waves), and works on wave trimming and turning. Intermediate: Comfortable in head-high waves at beach breaks , has a solid foundation in wave trimming and turning, including the log roll /turtle turn. Intermediate-Advanced: Comfortable on reef breaks and point breaks of head height and above. Capable of duck diving and performing maneuvers like the cutback . Advanced: Experienced surfer, perfectly at ease in powerful waves and challenging conditions.
