    Mountain biking and e-mountain biking

    Beginner
For those wishing to discover mountain biking, enduro, or "All Mountain" riding, and who have little or no experience mountain biking in the mountains. You want to learn the essential technical skills for both descending and climbing on rideable trails.
    Intermediate
For occasional mountain bikers. You are comfortable shifting gears and modulating your braking, and you can clear obstacles by unweighting the bike. You will ride on 4x4 tracks that offer a gradual progression, though you may encounter the occasional steep section. Daily elevation gain is approximately 400 to 600 meters.
    Confirmed
For mountain bikers who are already enthusiasts with some riding experience. You have mastered gear shifting and braking control, and are able to clear obstacles by unweighting the bike, as well as ride up or down short, steep sections. Ideal for riders looking to improve their descending skills on singletrack trails that are rarely very steep but sometimes technical (rocks, roots, etc.) without being exposed, featuring daily elevation gains of 600 to 1,000 meters.
    Advanced
For mountain bikers who are already skilled descenders and confident in their technique. You are capable of navigating switchbacks, riding along off-camber trails without hesitation, controlling your braking, and clearing small obstacles (such as roots, rocks, and steps). The long, sustained descents—which increase in difficulty throughout the week—are sometimes steep, often technical, and occasionally exposed, though rarely dangerous. Expect daily elevation gains of between 800m and 1,400m.
    Expert
For experts and experienced, regular riders. You are capable of navigating switchbacks and off-camber trails, controlling your braking, and clearing obstacles such as roots, rocks, and steps. The descents are long and sustained—often steep, technical, and sometimes exposed. You are looking to challenge yourself with daily elevation changes of 1,400 to 2,000 meters.

In a few words

It's also possible to cycle the Camino de Santiago! It's actually quite enjoyable! Between Geneva and Le Puy, you'll traverse a multitude of landscapes. The Savoyard foothills, with their rolling hills, are a vast bocage landscape, but also a land of vineyards! After following the Rhône River more or less closely, you'll reach Lake Paladru. The Chartreuse and Vercors mountains then appear in the background of the Bièvre plain. Next comes the Rhône Valley, which you'll cross at Condrieu, another renowned wine region! Gently, amidst orchards, the path climbs to the foot of the Pilat massif to reach the Haute-Loire region and its volcanic landscapes! To follow the entire route, it's best to set off with a mountain bike, an electric one if you're athletic, or a regular one if you're very fit! But it's also possible to do this route on a hybrid bike by following the variations we suggest. If you're not a regular cyclist, you can do this trip on an electric bike (with the option to recharge every evening).

The highlights

  • A route accessible to all thanks to electric assistance
  • A very flat route, combining flat terrain and mountain trails
  • Arrival in Le Puy-en-Velay, the capital of the Camino de Santiago

Management

Security

This route is undertaken without a guide and at your own risk. We provide all the necessary information and logistics for a successful hike. You must be able to be self-reliant, assessing your own abilities and responding to unexpected situations (fatigue, weather, presence of animals, changing terrain, etc.).

It is your responsibility to check with the Tourist Offices for weather updates (bulletins displayed) or call the weather information line at 08 99 71 02 + department number : Example 08 99 71 02 38 for Isère.

We would like to warn you about the effectiveness of mobile phones in mountainous areas. While villages are generally covered by mobile networks (depending on the operator), many areas remain without coverage, and your device will often be useless for long periods during the day. However, if a network is available, in case of emergency, you can dial 112, the priority emergency number.

We decline all responsibility in case of error on your part regarding orientation (error or change of route) or time management (departure too late in the morning, picnic break too long…).

Note

Mountain bike or hybrid bike?

Cycling is a really good way to travel this route. There are long stretches of smooth riding on dirt tracks or small paved roads. And there are sections on trails that would justify using a mountain bike, but most of these are avoidable, making it possible to do the route with a hybrid bike.

If you want to follow the entire Camino de Santiago route, a mountain bike is essential.

If you do all the "easier" variations we suggest, a hybrid bike is sufficient, but you'll have more tarmac!

If you are not a regular cyclist, this trip is perfect for cycling with electric assistance.
