Starting from Névache , this multi-day trek with overnight camping immerses you in the heart of unspoiled alpine landscapes, between the Hautes-Alpes and Savoie regions. Your adventure begins with a crossing of the Thures plateau , a secluded spot ideal for your first night under the stars.
The next day, the route ascends the wild Vallée Étroite to set up camp at the foot of the area's towering peak. The highlight of the trip awaits you on the third day: the ascent of Mont Thabor , reaching an altitude of 3,178 meters . This summit offers a spectacular 360-degree panorama of the Écrins and Vanoise mountain ranges. You then descend into the Savoyard region via secluded and rarely traveled mountain passes.
To complete this alpine loop, the trail skirts the massif to the north before crossing the Col du Vallon , marking the return to the sunlit Clarée Valley . After a final bivouac facing the peaks, a last panoramic climb precedes the descent to Névache. The return journey follows a splendid balcony path , offering breathtaking views of the Écrins massif, bringing this invigorating trip to a beautiful close.

Hiking / Trekking
For those wishing to hike for up to 6 hours a day and/or cover an elevation gain of 600 to 800 meters, both on and off-trail. High-altitude sections are possible. You engage in a sporting activity once a week, hike regularly, and are in very good physical condition.
The expert's opinion
This trek is suitable for people who regularly engage in physical activity and have prior experience hiking in the mountains on steep and rocky trails. The route also includes sections off-trail. The daily elevation gain is approximately 800 meters .
Thanks to a food resupply planned midway through the trip, we will have a maximum of 2.5 days' worth of food supplies to carry. The backpack, including camping equipment, water, and food, will therefore weigh between 10 kg (at the end of the trip) and 12 kg (at the beginning of the trip).

Checking backpacks, distributing food and individual and group camping equipment.
Then we set off on our first climb, a lovely shaded path through the forest to the Thures plateau: a bucolic spot perched high above, surrounded by rocky ridges and peaks. This is where we'll spend our first night, having strayed quite a bit from the GR trail to set up camp in a less frequented area.
Day 1 -
Narrow Valley and bivouac at the foot of Thabor

After breaking camp and making sure we hadn't left anything behind, we descended into the forest to reach a Franco-Italian valley, the Vallée Étroite. We then walked a few kilometers along a trail popular with Italian hikers. Peace and quiet returned as we passed the junction leading to Lac Vert and then the one leading to Mont Thabor. We then reached a wide and pleasant valley which we followed uphill to our ideally located campsite near Mont Thabor. We were at the foot of towering limestone cliffs, nicknamed "the little Dolomites of the Cerces."

This morning we climbed Mont Thabor via narrow paths winding between scree slopes and a rocky ridge. It's a more technical route than the GR (long-distance hiking trail), but not very busy. We met up with many other hikers on the final ascent beneath the broad summit. Up there, at 3178m altitude, on a clear day you can admire the highest peaks of the French and Italian Alps. Then came a beautiful descent, partly off-trail, to skirt Mont Thabor to the north and reach our campsite on the Savoie side: below lies the upper Maurienne valley.

Back in the Hautes-Alpes between Vallée Etroite and Clarée

This morning we finish the Savoyard section of this trek by passing the Thabor refuge and crossing the Col de la Vallée Etroite, the gateway back to the Hautes-Alpes. We descend into the Vallée Etroite before turning off towards the ascent of the Col du Vallon for a final magnificent bivouac next to a mountain lake.

Ascent of a final summit and a path along a balcony overlooking the Clarée valley

We begin our final day with a short but challenging climb to reach a beautiful, rarely visited summit of almost 3000m, offering a 360° panoramic view. The descent is punctuated by a series of mountain lakes, leading to a pleasant trail that traverses the contours of the Clarée Valley above. A final descent takes us back down to the Clarée River, completing this magnificent trek!
