In a few words

You'll follow the Way of St. James (Via Gebennensis) to walk in the footsteps of German and Swiss pilgrims. Leaving the shores of Lake Geneva in Geneva, you'll quickly cross into France, skirting Mont Salève towards the Col du Mont Sion. You might even encounter Romans at the Neydens milestone or Carthusian monks at the Pomier Monastery. Nestled between the Grand Colombier and the Montagne des Princes, the Pays de Seyssel, shaped by the Rhône River, welcomes you and opens the doors to Savoy and the Chautagne vineyards. The landscape becomes more mountainous as you reach Mont Tournier (877 m). This path, steeped in history and spirituality, ends in Saint-Genix-sur-Guiers, the final destination of your journey. There, you can sample the famous brioche filled with red pralines, a representation of Saint Agatha's breast according to legend!

The highlights

  • A varied and interesting hiking trail away from the crowds
  • The departure from the shores of Lake Geneva and the visit to Geneva
  • The discovery of the Rhône ecosystem

Security

This route is undertaken without a guide and at your own risk. We provide all the necessary information and logistics for a successful hike. You must be able to be self-reliant, assessing your own abilities and responding to unexpected situations (fatigue, weather, presence of animals, changing terrain, etc.).

It is your responsibility to check with the Tourist Offices for weather updates (bulletins displayed) or call the weather information line at 08 99 71 02 + department number : Example 08 99 71 02 38 for Isère.

We would like to warn you about the effectiveness of mobile phones in mountainous areas. While villages are generally covered by mobile networks (depending on the operator), many areas remain without coverage, and your device will often be useless for long periods during the day. However, if a network is available, in case of emergency, you can dial 112, the priority emergency number.

We decline all responsibility in case of error on your part regarding orientation (error or change of route) or time management (departure too late in the morning, picnic break too long…).

  • St-Julien-en-Genevois - Geneva - St-Julien-en-Genevois

    • Activity Hiking
    • Duration of the activity 3h
    • Distance 13 km
    • Positive elevation gain 130 m
    • Negative elevation 80 m
    • Accommodation 2-star hotel
    • Breakfast not included
    • Lunch not included
    • Dinner included

The meeting point is in Saint Julien en Genevois, France, not far from the border (for luggage transport reasons at the Swiss border). After a transfer by bus (regular line, approximately €3 at your own expense), you will reach the starting point of the hike (bring your ID card or passport) on the banks of the Rhône in Geneva. After exploring the city and Lake Geneva, it's time to begin the Camino. We recommend visiting St. Peter's Cathedral and its towers (beautiful views of Geneva and the surrounding area). After leaving the city, you will join the GR65, which you will then follow (perhaps all the way to the Roncevaux Pass on the Spanish border). You will return to your accommodation in Saint Julien en Genevois. Dinner is not included. You will find many restaurants in Saint Julien en Genevois.

If you only arrive in the late afternoon, it is still possible to reach Geneva by bus the next day to complete the first two stages.

    Day 1

Note

The times were calculated based on a pace of 300 meters of elevation gain per hour uphill, 500 meters of elevation loss per hour downhill, and 4 km per hour on flat terrain, in order to allow for a comparison of the different hikes on the same basis. They only include actual walking time; all meal breaks, rest stops, or periods of quiet contemplation must be added.

We may need to modify your itinerary if the planned accommodations are unavailable during your travel dates. The alternative accommodations offered will be of a similar category and their location will have minimal impact on your route. Rest assured, these changes are always made in your best interest, for your safety and comfort!

Note : On this section of the Camino de Santiago, accommodations are limited and small. Depending on closure days, the various possible accommodations at certain stages are often several kilometers apart. The stage lengths mentioned in this guide are based on typical locations along the route and are therefore only indicative. Once you have the complete itinerary, you will have all the information needed to recalculate the actual distance.
