In a few words

Sri Lanka, a tropical island with a 2,000-year-old civilization, has been renowned for centuries for its spices and precious stones. A veritable giant emerald in the middle of the Indian Ocean, the island boasts golden beaches, lush jungles, mountains covered in tea plantations, and magnificent ruins that bear witness to its past grandeur. We visit both well-known and more secluded archaeological sites, also enjoying short hikes in the countryside. At Sigiriya, the "Lion Rock," we discover the mysterious "Maiden Frescoes." In Polonnaruwa, we explore the royal palace, the Shiva temple, and Buddhist temples by bicycle. Medirigiriya and Kaludiya are lesser-known gems. After a short hike to the meditation caves, we explore the impressive cave and rock art complex of Dambulla. We then explore the mountainous region of central Sri Lanka, visiting a spice garden, the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy, and the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens! After a beautiful hike through tea plantations, we arrive in Nurawa Eliya, a former British hill station, in the heart of Sri Lanka's tea country. Our journey then takes us to the grassy savannah of Horton Plains and to the "End of the World" (a nickname for Sri Lanka). A short ride on a local train allows us to enjoy another beautiful day amidst tea plantations, jungle, and waterfalls. Then, a change of scenery awaits as we head south to track animals in Udawalawe National Park. We also visit Galle, a former spice trading post coveted by Europeans. A relaxing break by the sea on the south coast concludes this wonderful trip before our international flight home.

The highlights

  • Numerous hikes through forests, mountains, countryside, villages, rice paddies and fields
  • Must-see archaeological sites in Sri Lanka: Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa, Dambulla
  • Horton Plains and Udawalawe National Parks

This trip far exceeded our expectations: a blend of discovery and relaxed intensity. Ideal for recharging. Sri Lanka was a truly wonderful discovery: a multifaceted island, incredibly kind people, lush nature, and abundant wildlife. The trip involved a fair amount of travel by bus (in very comfortable conditions), but each time it was a feast for the eyes. The hikes and walks were varied and suitable for everyone. Our guide (driver and assistant) took excellent care of us. The highlight was the third-class train experience... amazing! Thank you for everything.

Sri Lanka is a country worth discovering, so rich in culture, with lovely people and varied, magnificent landscapes. Special mention goes to our guide, Podi, who made our holiday unforgettable. The fitness level is accessible to everyone. We were a small group of six, and only two of us had booked through Decathlon Travel. The program was slightly different from the one booked with the local agency, but it was fine for us (except for the night in a temple and the meditation session, which were a complete disaster: cancelled the very morning!).

I really enjoyed this trip to Sri Lanka; it was my first group hiking trip, and I wasn't disappointed. There were different expectations and skill levels, but the group atmosphere was great. I loved the walks through the tea plantations, the villages, the temples, the wildlife, the two meals we had in traditional restaurants, and the safari that was included in the itinerary. I wouldn't recommend the safari at Hurulu Eco Park, which didn't seem very respectful of the elephants. There were too many vehicles to see a single elephant. The hotels are 3-star local, so keep that in mind. Some hotels have potential but are showing their age (perhaps due to COVID and the country's economy). It was one of the least expensive trips I've taken, and frankly, I think the value for money was good. I particularly enjoyed the hotel in Mirissa at the end of my trip, which was close to the beach and offered unique rooms. The fish and shellfish stalls right on the beach, practically with your feet in the water, meant that finishing with a delicious lobster (not included) on the beach was simply magnificent. Throughout the trip, I thoroughly enjoyed the photos and videos.

Wonderful trip to Sri Lanka! Decathlon/***** met and exceeded all my expectations. The tour operator used all their expertise to organize my stay perfectly. Our guide was knowledgeable not only about the country's history but also about Buddhism, Hinduism, and local customs. A true gem, Mr. Sarat. The hiking level was exactly what I expected; we enjoyed magnificent walks through tea plantations and parks. In hindsight, I would have arranged my flight to arrive on Monday morning or Sunday evening to start the tour immediately. My travel companions had Monday free but weren't able to do much. I also suggest spending one less night in Mirissa and one night in Galle, which is stunning and very different from anything else we saw in the rest of the country. The trip was very safe, and everyone was extremely kind and helpful. A truly memorable trip.
