In a few words

You'll cross the Pilat Regional Natural Park and the Meygal plateaus, following in the footsteps of German and Swiss pilgrims. This section of the route is undoubtedly one of the most interesting in terms of its historical context, natural beauty, and hiking experience. For centuries, these paths have been used by pilgrims and hikers.

You have reached the end of your hike in Le Puy-en-Velay. It was from the Notre-Dame du Puy cathedral, perched atop its volcanic peak, that Godescalc, Bishop of Le Puy, set off for Santiago de Compostela. He was the first non-Spanish pilgrim to complete the pilgrimage in the year 950. This is where the Via Podiensis begins.

The highlights

  • A varied and interesting hiking trail away from the crowds
  • The vineyards of the Rhône Valley
  • Crossing the plateaus of Mézenc and Velay

Security

This route is undertaken without a guide and at your own risk. We provide all the necessary information and logistics for a successful hike. You must be able to be self-reliant, assessing your own abilities and responding to unexpected situations (fatigue, weather, presence of animals, changing terrain, etc.).

It is your responsibility to check with the Tourist Offices for weather updates (bulletins displayed) or call the weather information line at 08 99 71 02 + department number : Example 08 99 71 02 43 for Haute-Loire.

We would like to warn you about the effectiveness of mobile phones in mountainous areas. While villages are generally covered by mobile networks (depending on the operator), many areas remain without coverage, and your device will often be useless for long periods during the day. However, if a network is available, in case of emergency, you can dial 112, the priority emergency number.

We decline all responsibility in case of error on your part regarding orientation (error or change of route) or time management (departure too late in the morning, picnic break too long…).

The alternative accommodations offered will be of a similar category and their location will have minimal impact on your route. A beautiful route between Condrieu and Le Puy-en-Velay, quality accommodations, and top-notch organization, from the printed itinerary to the very well-designed digital roadbook – I set off with complete peace of mind. The stages weren't too long, sometimes even a little short, allowing you to take your time. No particular difficulties if you're reasonably fit.
