In a few words

This hike is organized from Le Puy-en-Velay . You arrive the day before departure to properly prepare for the hike. After the first stage, you will quickly find yourself in the vast landscapes of the Velay region and reach the Lozère and Gévaudan areas! You will then cross Mont Lozère before ending peacefully in the southern Cévennes, in Saint-Jean-du-Gard. During this trip, you can stop at the Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Abbey, where the nuns welcome visitors on a donation basis (free-will offering). We offer to adapt the stages to suit your needs, with 13 days of hiking approximately 18km per day.

The expert's opinion

The idea is that hikers can easily assess the difficulty of the hike before setting out on this trail: this route requires a minimum of experience on generally well-marked, mid-mountain paths . It's best to be in good shape, or at least reasonably fit, but it's perfectly doable if you're used to some physical activity, even light exercise!

A little training in mountain hiking may be necessary, particularly to cope with the elevation gain and the length of the hike. There may be some off-trail sections, but the route is generally straightforward.

The path is not always in good condition and there may be sections with stones, making the walk a little more difficult and strenuous.

High-top hiking boots and weather-appropriate clothing are necessary.

Some sections may be exposed at times, and slips or missteps should be avoided by walking carefully.

It may be necessary to pay attention to the practicability of the route depending on the weather conditions.

    Le Puy en Velay

    • Breakfast not included
    • Lunch not included
    • Dinner not included

In the beginning, the volcanoes of Auvergne spewed their incandescent magma onto the Velay. Once cooled, the basalt became a peak on which men built a religious monument.

To fully enjoy the old town, plan a day on foot. Strolling through its narrow streets in the moonlight will leave unforgettable impressions.

    Night in a B&B

    • Explore the city of Le Puy and its cathedral at your leisure.

In Le Puy-en-Velay, you will be accommodated close to the city centre.
You can dine in town in the many restaurants of Puy en Velay or directly at your accommodation.

Note

This program, and its variations as presented here, is not a fixed itinerary. You can still personalize it to suit your preferences, and we will certainly suggest adaptations based on your hiking experience. Here are a few additional options for your hike.

Stage 2: Cheylard l'évèque - Luc - 15km, approximately 5h30, +550m, -400m

• By Florac:

The paths become drovers' roads: the routes of transhumance and communication across the Cévennes since time immemorial!

Stage 1: Pont de Montvert - Florac - 20km, approximately 6 hours, +800m, -900m

Stage 2: Florac - Cassagnas - 19km, approximately 5h30, +750m, -500m

• As far as Alès:

The final stage of the GR70, the Stevenson Trail. The path crosses the Malabouisse forest in the Cévennes National Park and opens onto views of Alès.

After a guided trip to the Cantal region booked through Decathlon Travel, I decided to go further and hike the Stevenson Trail on my own. This trip will remain one of the best memories of my life. I definitely plan to do it again in St. Guilhem! See you soon on the trails and THANK YOU!

The quality of the accommodations and the distances between these stages were very uneven. Some were very nice, others just okay, and one was awful. Sudrandos didn't react at all to the absolutely dreadful hotel. In fact, we paid extra for two intermediaries and had no guarantee of decent accommodation.
