On July 18, 2025, I booked a hiking trip in the Vosges Mountains, advanced level, in a group of 5 to 14 people for 7 days. On August 14, I noticed spam in my inbox. I checked it to verify the sender. It turned out to be an email dated August 11, 2025, at 8:29 PM from the Auberge de l'Étang du Devin, a copy of which is below. Auberge l'Étang du Devin Mon. Aug. 11 8:29 PM To me Hello Jacqueline, We are contacting you regarding your registration for a hiking trip with us. We are expecting you as planned on Sunday the 17th. Will you be coming by car or do you need us to pick you up at the Colmar train station? Also, please note that the theme of the trip will be different. Actually, you registered for a level 3 trip, which is quite athletic, and you will be on level 2. Thank you for your confirmation regarding transportation. See you soon. Have a lovely evening. Clarisse and Thierry. Very surprised by the content of this email without any explanation, I immediately called the hostel. They informed me that due to a lack of participants for the booked trip, it could not take place. How can you automatically put a participant on another trip without asking their opinion, especially given the rather late decision to find an alternative? Therefore, I asked what the replacement trip was. Thierry replied that it was an almost identical intermediate trip called: Secret Hikes in the Vosges. This trip provided no description of the daily walking time or the elevation gain. During the welcome meeting for all participants, we went around the table to introduce ourselves. Some of them had very little hiking experience. To avoid him making multiple trips to the starting points of the hikes, Thierry asked if one of the participants would be willing to drive a minibus. One participant agreed, which is a significant responsibility. I don't understand this approach, as it wasn't mentioned in the itinerary. This did save Thierry time and money on fuel. The price of the trip included the transfer himself. Also, during this trip, some participants who had registered independently were added to the group, sometimes bringing the number up to 19. However, the itinerary clearly states that the group is limited to 14 members. Regarding the meals, both the picnic lunch and dinner, I would have liked to see more vegetables. For my first experience with a hotel run by hikers, I was quite disappointed with this hostel. In discussions with other participants in the group who had booked directly with the hostel or not, some of them were also dissatisfied with the number of hikers, the organization of transfers, and the meals.

Hello Jacqueline,

Thank you for your detailed feedback.

We regret the late change of program, due to a lack of participants. According to our partner, alternatives were offered to you, and you agreed to participate in the Level 2 course.

Regarding the on-site organization, some adjustments were made with an ecological focus, in agreement with the participants, and the meals are generally very well received for their quality and balanced diet. However, we are sorry that the experience did not meet your expectations.
