Extension: If you wish to climb the Grand Ballon, it is possible to add a night at Le Markstein for a loop hike that passes by the summit. The itinerary would then be as follows:
- Day 4: Markstein – Grand Ballon (1424 m) – Markstein (1200 m)
The Vosges ridge continues southeast, leading you over a series of hills and passes to the Grand Ballon. The view from its summit is breathtaking. The Alsace plain lies at your feet, and on a clear day, the entire Alpine chain is visible in the distance! Several restaurants offer opportunities for a break below, and the return journey follows different paths, with the option of descending to the shores of Lac du Ballon (1100 m), adding another 200 m of elevation gain – or more!
Stage of 5 hours 30 minutes of walking - Elevation gain: 526 m - Elevation loss: 526 m - Length: 18 km
- Day 5: Markstein - Langenfeldkopf (1290 m) - Petit Ballon (1272 m) - Munster (370 m)
This is the wildest stage, the landscapes are captivating, the vegetation varied with pines, heather, and juniper. Transfers to Le Markstein. We cross the old pastures of Le Markstein and then those of Steinlebach before reaching the Oberlauchen pass (1211m). The path follows the ridge to the Petit Ballon before beginning the descent to Munster, which is absolutely stunning!
The hike ends around 4:00 PM in Munster. There's an opportunity to visit the village: abbey, church, and the Albert parks. – Length: 21 km
