Our Commitments to Responsible Tourism

Our Decarbonization Roadmap

We know that the tourism industry has an impact on the environment. We are conscious of today's imperative to adopt more responsible lifestyles. We are also convinced that tourism can contribute to a better world by constantly improving its practices.

1. UNDERSTANDING: What is a carbon footprint?

When we talk about a carbon footprint, we are talking about the impact on climate change. It is calculated by measuring all greenhouse gases (nitrogen, methane, carbon dioxide, etc.) emitted by the trip. Learn more +

Here are a few examples:

  1. 30 km in a minibus for an internal transfer = 2.54 kg CO2e

  2. 2 nights in a guesthouse = 24.98 kg CO2e

  3. 1 full chicken-based meal in a bistro = 2.23 kg CO2e

Why "kg CO2e"?

To simplify reading this footprint, these gases and their impact are converted into equivalent kilograms. We therefore talk about kg CO2e; the small "e" following CO2 stands for "equivalent".

This is a unit created by the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) to compare different greenhouse gases on the same scale and provide a clear view of the impact of a product or service. For example, the IPCC estimates that 1 tonne of methane (which is a greenhouse gas) is on average 28 times more harmful in terms of pollution and global warming than 1 tonne of CO2.

2. MEASURING: Which emissions are included in our trips?

We have developed a method enabling us to measure the CO2 emissions, or CO2 equivalent, emitted by a trip. The trip emission measurement is available for 100% of the trips online on our website, in the trip overview. We count all emissions generated by the services included in the trip. Learn more +

3. REDUCING

We are working to reduce the emissions generated by trips taken by our customers. Here are the main concrete actions implemented in partnership with our local agencies:

  1. Eliminate trips with an environmental impact exceeding 530 kg of CO2 per day.

  2. Promote a "domestic travel" offering close to our customers. In 2023, 45% of our trips were in mainland France, and more broadly, 72% were in Europe.

  3. Promote low-impact transport methods during scheduled transfers, favoring, for example, an electric minibus over a combustion engine minibus.

  4. Increase the proportion of vegetarian meals and meals using locally produced ingredients.

  5. Encourage our travelers to use repairable or second-hand equipment.

Our Contribution to Global Carbon Neutrality

Decathlon Travel is committed to the fight against global warming by offsetting the carbon emissions produced by its travelers during their trip. In 2021, Decathlon Travel contributed to funding the "Le Bois de la Menaudière" project, located in the municipality of Saint-Cyr-le-Gravelais. This project is certified under the Low Carbon Label by the Ministry for Ecological Transition. Find all the details here.

Our Responsible Travel Offering

Our Low-Carbon Trips

What is a low-carbon trip at Decathlon Travel? It is a trip that combines the following 3 criteria:

  1. The presence of a train or bus station near the departure point (< 40 km from the departure city in Europe).

  2. A trip that emits a maximum of 12 kg CO2e per day per person.

  3. A low-emission sports activity.

In short, you use low-emission transportation during your stay, engage in low-emission sports activities (such as cycling, kayaking, or hiking), and finally, you can reach your starting destination by train or intercity bus.

Find your next low-environmental-impact adventure! A wide variety of low-carbon sports trips awaits you.

Our Solidarity Action Trips

We now offer solidarity action trips. Choosing to participate in this type of trip means choosing to contribute to the specific needs of a community.

Our Trips Accessible by Train

Train travel is one of the least carbon-intensive modes of transport, after walking and cycling! Discover our adventures accessible by train.

Working with Committed Partners

We only work with partners who share our ambition to act for economically, socially, and environmentally responsible tourism. We highlight their initiatives and aim to help them develop this virtuous approach by sharing best practices and providing them with tools to measure their impact.

Here are the areas in which all our partners have taken action:

  1. Low ecological impact sports activities

  1. Awareness-raising on environmental and social issues

  1. Zero-plastic policy

  1. Equipment sustainability plan

  1. Committed waste management

  1. Small-group trips

  1. Fair and local compensation

  1. Carbon offset program

  1. Mostly local and/or organic products

Our Other Commitments to Responsible Tourism

Decathlon Travel has been registered as a mission-driven company (Société à mission) in the Trade and Companies Register since July 28, 2022. The entire team works daily to fulfill our purpose—we are committed to adopting sustainable practices and sharing them with tourism stakeholders, including our service providers, employees, and customers, to act together for a better world. Our company therefore intends to generate a positive and significant social, societal, and environmental impact through its activities.

Since September 2022, Decathlon Travel has been committed to a responsible tourism approach by actively participating in the work and activities of the Agir pour un Tourisme Responsable (Act for Responsible Tourism) association.

For us, responsible tourism is tourism that is conscious of its impact on the environment, local development, and indigenous populations, and that primarily benefits local ecosystems. We are convinced that travel is a wonderful opportunity to meet others, learn about other cultures, and discover the beauty of the world. We want to promote small-group trips that incorporate opportunities to meet and exchange with local communities, enable a connection with nature, and do not degrade the environment.
